Buddhism is a religion and is followed by many people in almost every region. It is founded in 5th century BC in northeastern part. Between the mid-sixth and mid-fourth centuries B.C., Buddhism was founded in northeastern India and soon spread throughout the Asian subcontinent, influencing cultural and spiritual practices, art, and architecture. King Ashoka was so troubled by the effects of the conquests on humanity that he converted to Buddhism. Adopting a code of nonviolence, he renounced all warfare and incorporated principles of Buddhism in his ruling practices. King Ashoka promoted Buddhist expansion by sending monks to surrounding territories to share the teachings of the Buddha. A wave of conversion began, and Buddhism spread not only through India, but also internationally. Many Buddhists who join a monastic community do so because it offers a life of immersion in the dharma. It also is seen as an opportunity to help others, serve one’s community, and protect and maintain the religion for future generations. Today, around half a billion people around the world practice Buddhism, which is built upon principles like the Four Noble Truths and pursuit of nirvana.
